Owen Family Update - Week of June 26, 2023

Dear Parents/Guardians,

It is our final week of school and everyone is excited for summer.  We have accomplished a lot over the year and created many great memories.  Our Grade 5 students graduate on Monday and it's a great celebration to end their elementary experience.  As our graduates move onto middle school, we welcome our Owen preschoolers who will begin their elementary experience in junior kindergarten.

We've had a full week honouring our volunteers at our appreciation breakfast. Our volunteers support our staff and help make Owen a great place to be.  Here is just a little thanks from our Owen students.

Our Kindergarten concert was also a success!  A beautiful set, adorable students, all excited to perform for their families.  Thanks to our Kindergarten team for making this a special night!

Ms Kuzic extended our Mom's Fitness and ran a Family Fitness night.  What fun!  Parents and their kids explored different stations of activities.  It was a great way to spend time with family.

Our Gr 5 students were so proud and excited to share their GoIT projects with the school last Friday. The students in Ms. Martan's, Mr. Price's, and Ms. Smyth's classes have been working on creating mobile apps that help to address global and local issues associated with the United Nations Goals for Sustainable Development. At the Fair, younger students had the opportunity to circulate from presentation to presentation and enjoy a hands-on experience trying out a variety of digital prototypes. Way to go Gr 5s!  Amazing work!

In addition to those mentioned last week who are retiring and having babies, we are saying goodbye to several staff who will be moving on from Owen:

Ms Adriana Triastaru
Ms Giovanna Marro
Ms Joyita Sen
Mr Quintin Sim
Ms Katerina Gres
Ms Fatemeh Hosseini
Mme Sabrina Pennesi
M Jonathan McArthur
Ms Cristina Martan
Mme Sarah Wlodek
Ms Michelle Tobin-Krofchick
Ms Sharon Lee

Perhaps some may be back at Owen, but wish everyone well wherever they may be.

We look forward to welcoming Mme Jill Kelsall who is the new incoming Principal to Owen PS.  Mme Kelsall will be starting in January and is looking forward to being part of the Owen Family.

From Ms Rosenbloom
I want to thank everyone for having me part of the Owen family. I wish you all the best and know you will keep making Owen the best it can be because that is the Owen way!

To our graduating families - We wish you all the best in middle school and know that your child can have an impact on the years to come.

Have a wonderful summer!  Be safe and have fun!

Moving Out of Owen for September 2023?

As we are beginning the process for next year please let us know if your child will be moving to another school.  We want to make sure their Ontario Student Records (OSR) or any other important information gets forwarded to their new school.  If students are moving out of the province, their OSR will stay at Owen and can be retrieved if they return to Ontario.

Grade 5 students graduating will also need to complete this form.

Marvelous & Mind-Boggling Math
aka M&M Math

I'd like to introduce to you 3 video series that I have worked on as an educational consultant around mathematics or coding.  The Wacky Number Songs series is available on Youtube or TVO Kids. Tiny and Tall will premier in the fall.  Mia & Codie will also premier in the fall and will have coding games available as well.  Have a sneak peak at the series!
~ Caroline

Wacky Number Songs

Wacky Number Songs inspires kids to get curious about math all while singing along to the catchiest, coolest tunes.

Tiny & Tall

Tiny and Tall live in neighbouring mountaintop villages. But sometimes, it feels like they’re from different worlds. For as long as anyone can remember, a rope bridge has tethered their two mountains. And one day, Tiny crosses that bridge! The series features a friendship founded on acceptance, using early preschool math curriculum to explore and celebrate “differences” in a tangible way. In Tiny and Tall’s world, learning is brought to life with simple, silly lessons on sorting, counting, and patterns. It’s about understanding how THIS might be different from… THAT!

Mia & Cody

Mia, an almost 8-year-old girl, wants to make the world more marvelous through coding, and her “bro-bot” is the ideal partner. Together, Mia and Codie solve everyday preschool problems using code blocks, out-of-the box thinking and gung-ho exuberance. Mia and Codie are ready to RUN THE CODE and turn the ordinary into the extraordinary!

Of course, coding is like life: We make mistakes, learn from them, and try again! Code often needs debugging...and so does Codie. As Mia learns more about her little bro-bot and her world, she grows as a coder, a thinker... and a big sister.
