Monday November 23 (11,23) is Fibonacci Day!
Every November 23rd, Fibonacci Day honors Leonardo Bonacci, one of the most influential mathematicians of the Middle Ages. The date corresponds to the first numbers of the Fibonacci sequence – 1 1 2 3.
Fibonacci is an Italian mathematician who is also known as Leonardo of Pisa and Leonardo Fibonacci. Some say Fibonacci invented the Fibonacci sequence. This pattern of counting means that each number is the sum of the previous two. (0,1,1,2,3,5,8,13, etc.) Computer data storage and processing uses this number sequence today. The sequence is also useful in the trading of stocks and architecture. Another unexpected place we find the sequence is in nature. DNA patterns and hurricanes contain patterns showing this sequence. Math and science classes refer to the Fibonacci sequence as “nature’s secret code” or “nature’s universal rule.” Additionally, the number sequence is tied to the golden ratio and the golden triangle.
The Fibonacci numbers were published in his book, Liber Abaci in the year 1202. Fibonacci’s book introduced the Western World to the Hindu-Arabic numeral system we use today. This numeral system writes numbers as 1,2,3, etc. instead of Roman numerals I, II, III, etc.
Fibonacci was born in 1170. As a young boy, he traveled with his father, an Italian merchant named Guglielmo. During his travels, he learned about the Hindu-Arabic numeral system. As he traveled around the Mediterranean Coast, Fibonacci met with merchants and learned their arithmetic systems. In the 19th century, the city of Pisa erected a statue of Fibonacci. Today it stands in the western gallery of the Camposanto.

HOW TO OBSERVE #FibonacciDay
Math and science classes around the world hold a variety of fun activities utilizing the Fibonacci sequence.
Owen would like you to submit a photo of your Fibonacci Sequence. Look for items in your home or nature containing the Fibonacci sequence, take a photo with your phone and upload it to the Fibonacci Sequence Photo Share.
You can also:
- Learn more about Fibonacci or other famous mathematicians, including Archimedes, Newton, and Gauss.
- Learn about other math holidays like Pi Day, Pythagorean Theorem Day, Math 2.0 Day, and Mole Day.
- Bake Fibonacci spiral cookies, a perfect dessert for the upcoming holidays.
- Do some fun Fibonacci exercises.

It's that time of the year! Please be careful when driving to drop off your children at school or during pick up. Our little Green Owen students in the back have helped alleviate traffic for the crosswalk. We are still seeing unsafe driving by pulling into the back bus loop as well as making u-turns in the intersection.

Every year Owen has put together Holiday Hampers for St. Vincent de Paul to support some of our Owen families and families within the community. During this pandemic holiday season, we will continue to support these families with gift cards to various retailers to help them through the holiday season.
If you’d like, you can donate each week for a different gift card or choose one of your choice. They will be in denominations of: $10 or$25 or $50. You can also donate multiple denominations. Fundraising will begin Monday November 23rd 2020 ONLY through School Cash-Online.

Start of the Year Forms
Each week we will send reminders for the Start of the Year forms to be completed. These forms give permission for the following:
- walking excursions
- meda release
- medical
- permission to leave during inclement weather.
Many have opened the email from the board but have not completed them. We will be following up with parents over the next couple of weeks to ensure our information is up to date.

One of our strengths at Owen is our cultural diversity. Student love seeing and hearing about traditions that are different from their own. Last year our Owen parents came and decorated our display cases to share and educate our students about their family traditions and holidays. If you'd like to contribute items to be displayed for a few weeks to celebrate a holiday or share your cultural traditions, please have your child come see us in the office and we can arrange it.

Extra Masks & Outdoor wear
With the snowy wet weather, please send extra masks for your child to school. Once they are wet, they need to be changed. Snowpants, boots, extra pants and socks are also helpful to keep students dry for the rest of the day. Phys Ed teachers will be having as many gym classes outside. Please dress accordingly.

Daily Health App - Trouble logging out to sign in to another sibling's account
Service Now is continuing to fix bugs in their app. There is a fix to the logging out of a student to get into their sibling's account issue. You need to clear the cache and history on the phone before you can log into the other child. Here is a link on how to do this.

Early French Immersion Application Process - SK Entry:
For families interested in the Toronto District School Board's Early French Immersion Program (begins in Senior Kindergarten), we offer an online process to apply. Attached please find an important information package.
To apply for the Early French Immersion Program (SK entry) for September 2021, applications must be completed online between November 2 and November 27, 2020.
An offer of placement in the program (not a specific school) is guaranteed to all on-time applicants and will be made in the weeks following the close of the application window.
Please note: Families with an older sibling currently enrolled in the same French program and who will be in attendance next year are still required to complete an online application for the new student. Please select the “sibling option” within the online application.

Zumba with Lupita
Lupita is running some free classes for children and adults.
The Adapted 5:00pm Tuesday class is for children with disabilities.
This class is free and is offered by city of Toronto adapted and inclusive division.
The morning classes are for adults and seniors, Zumba toning (with weights)
