Owen Family Update - Week of May 31st, 2021

Hello Owen Families,

We hope you enjoyed your weekend.  We know that how difficult it is to keep your child engaged as the weather gets nicer outside and we appreciated having them online with cameras on so teachers can monitor their involvement.  As we await announcements from the Premier, we will continue our remote learning.

We will also be preparing to collect any school or central devices in the next few weeks.  If we will be returning to school before the end of the school year, please return the devices on the first day back.

Check out the relaxation techniques and suggestions for parents for synchronous learning from our school social worker.  These are in the attachments of the email.

Just a reminder that Friday June 4th 2021 is a PA Day for all students.  There will be no school.  A great break for students and parents too!

Owen Family Update - Week of May 17th, 2021

Hello Owen Families,

We hope our families had an opportunity to spend International Family  Day this weekend with the beautiful weather.  We also hope our students who celebrated Eid enjoyed the special day.  We have 6 weeks left of school with about half of it still in remote learning.  With the announcement this week of the extension of the shutdown, schools will continue to be online.

We are still in the 3rd wave and we need to keep going!  Please make sure if you go to the park , you are keeping a distance and wearing a mask if you are within 6 feet of others outside your household.  The stay at home order has been extended to June 2nd.

We continue to check in on the school and are excited to see the flowers and trees grow and the field restoration take place.  You will see the spaces fenced off with new sod in place and ready to grow.

Assessment and Evaluation During Remote Learning

Over the next few weeks, staff will be accumulating evidence of learning from January for the final report cards in June. This will comprise assessments and evaluations from a mix of in person and remote learning. Assessments could be in the form of what the teacher sees in class based on questions asked by the teacher, or some anecdotal notes on general progress of the student. These may not have marks assigned but observational notes or checklists for understanding. Evaluations may look like quizzes, tests, projects, presentations or writing pieces and typically have a mark assigned and is based on INDEPENDENT WORK.

We understand that this has been a difficult time and especially for those in which focus has always been difficult. If there is not enough evidence to demonstrate achievement in an area of the curriculum, students will receive an incomplete mark (I) on the report card. Students on exemptions are required to complete asynchronous work from the google classrooms and submitted to the teacher for evaluation.

Here are some suggestions to help ensure there is evidence of learning during remote learning:
  • Keep your child's camera on during class. It is difficult for the teacher to assess oral communication or whether students are understanding the lessons.
  • Parents can assist their child with technical difficulties but not with classwork. If students are working on an assessment/evaluation and they have a question, have your child advocate for themselves by asking the teacher, not the parent asking the teacher. Treat this as if they were at school.
  • Remove distractions for your child. If they have other devices that have video games, remove them until the weekend or if they have free time once their work is complete.
  • Check Google Classroom/Brightspace for assignments, posted work/lessons and calendar events. Ask your child how to view these. This will help those students on exemptions to know what they can submit. If you have technical difficulties, contact TDSB IT Support.
  • If your child is having difficulties, contact your child's classroom teacher to discuss alternate solutions. Office hours or modified assignments may help your child complete their work. If you have any questions about your child's progress or program, please their teacher.
