Week of Oct 2nd

A Message from the Administrative Team:
"It took cancer to realize that being self-centered is not the way to live.  The answer is to try and help others."                                                                                                                                                                                                    ~ Terry Fox
It was great to see many parents at our Curriculum Night.  It's always a great time to meet new staff and hear about the programs coming up for your child. We hope you had an opportunity to say hello to your teacher.  Parents will have an opportunity to learn more about their child's progress during interviews in November.

We had a great Terry Fox Run day!  Whether you ran or walked, students enjoyed working together for a great cause!  Students promoted the event through the Terry Fox fair in the library and finished it with graffiti in the playground.  Thank you to all our Terry Fox committee, staff and volunteers who made this day successful!

Just a reminder that Friday October 6th is a PA Day and there are no classes.

Have a fantastic week!
~ Ms Rosenbloom & Mr Miles

A Message from the Administrative Team:
"I want to try the impossible to show it can be done."
                                                                                                                       ~ Terry Fox

We are very excited for our upcoming year.  We survived the first couple of weeks and look forward to more exciting days this week.  Please remember to have an extra set of clothes and indoor shoes for your children at school for those puddle/accident days.

We would like to welcome back Ms Elizabeth and Ms Emily who are working in the office. We also have Ms Smyth, Mme Mungala, Mme Hartwell, Mme Ching, Mme Burchell, Ms Samanthi, Ms Laura and Mr Luan who have joined or returned from last year.

We would also like to welcome our Owen School Advisory Council (OSAC) Chair Helen Georgiou. We work closely with OSAC to provide the best opportunities for our students and families.  Please check the school calendar for future OSAC dates.

Check our school website at http://schoolweb.tdsb.on.ca/owen/ for our Weekly Owen Online newsletter, Teacher/Class websites and blogs, School Day Schedule and calendar and other information.

We look forward to connecting with our students and families for a fun filled year!

~ Ms Rosenbloom & Mr Miles

Parent Email List - We need your help!

We are generating our parent email list to ensure all families receive our online school communication both from teachers and the office.

If you know of parents who have not yet signed up, please direct them to http://schoolweb.tdsb.on.ca/owen/School-Communication to complete the online form.  The sooner we have emails, the quicker information gets out to the community.

We want to thank parents for following our safe school procedures. Just a reminder to those parents who are volunteering in the school to sign in and pick up a visitor’s pass in the office prior to going to the classroom.

Lates:
If your child arrives after 8:45 am, please take them to the office to receive a late slip before entering class.  The school will follow up with parents of students who are routinely late to discuss ways to support the student. If your child has a morning appointment and will sign in later, please notify the school the day before or before 8:00 am the day of the appointment.

Absences:
If your child is absent, please send an email to owenps@tdsb.on.ca or call the school at (416) 395-2742.  Clearly state your child’s first and last name, grade, teacher and reason for their absence.

If your child is being picked up for lunch, please send an email to owenps@tdsb.on.ca or a note to school in the morning so we are aware of the change.

Just a reminder to parents and caregivers that during recess, only staff and children are permitted in the school yard.  Parents and caregivers may stay in the yard at lunch 10 minutes prior to entry.

Stay updated! Owen School Calendar

See important events on our school calendar which can be found on our school website, Owen Online Newsletters and OSAC website.

To add to your phone and stay updated all the time, please visit  http://www.owenpublicschool.ca/calendar/ for instructions.  Thank you Jason Offet for adding these instructions!

School Lunches

In order to minimize disruption to the instructional day, student lunches can be dropped off on the table in front of the office.  Please use a sticky note provided and label the lunch with their name, grade and teacher.  Let Emily or Elizabeth know and students will pick it up at lunch.

Owen Public School is a nut-free school.  Please make sure all snacks and lunches do not contain any traces of nuts. Thank you for helping us keep our students safe.

Permission Forms & Waivers Needed!

We have many exciting trips planned for this school year and a few coming up this month.  Please make sure all forms are in immediately for the following trips to ensure your child's participation. Students will not be able to participate if permission forms and waivers are not returned.

Police Checks

We welcome parent volunteers throughout the year to help out in classrooms and on school trips.  All volunteers must have a police check prior to any work with our students.  This includes volunteers and drivers for any team sports events.

Please pick up a police check form from Emily in the office or talk to Elizabeth for more information.

If you have already submitted a police check in the past, you can now do an Offence Declaration in the school office. Please see Elizabeth in the office to check your status.  If your status is:

OD - You can see Elizabeth to do this online.

Still Waiting for Results - Follow up with the police department to check the progress of your police check.

Buses

The TDSB has been working hard to ensure bus transport students in the most safe way possible.

If your child is on the school bus
- they have been assigned a colourful bus tag to help identify the bus they are on
- they are on our school bus list

If your child is no longer taking the bus, please send an email or notify the school so we can remove your child from our lists.

We have several students on a waiting list for the bus.  If your child is absent 5 days in a row, students may lose access for the rest of the year to allow another student on the waiting list to use it. If your child is being picked up early and not taking the bus, please notify your child's teacher in writing.

We appreciate all parents cooperation to help make our bus routines safe for all students.

Caring & Safe School Committee - Parent Wanted

We are looking for 4-5 parents who are interested in participating in this year's committee. This committee involves parents, school staff and students. Meetings will run approx. once every 6-7 weeks during the lunch hour.  The committee will reflect on current practices and ways to better create a safe space for our students. If you are interested in joining our committee please contact stephen.miles@tdsb.on.ca.

Terry Fox Run/Walk is Here!

Date: Thursday, September 28th @ 9 a.m.
Rain Date:  Friday September 29th @ 9 a.m.
Dear Parents,

Every year, schools across Canada hold a Terry Fox event to raise money for cancer research. We are pleased to announce that Owen's Terry Fox Run/Walk is here!

We appreciate parents' generosity over the years and this year we will continue with past tradition in asking for parents and students to collect pledges from family and friends. You will have an option of filling in the pledge forms that will be sent home on September 26th, or donating online through Owen's dedicated donation page:  https://www.terryfox.ca/OwenPSNorthYorkON

OUR GOAL IS TO REACH $10,000 (students will have until October 15th to collect all donations and return them to school)

We would appreciate any help you would be able to give us in support of this event. If you would like to volunteer on the walk with your child's class, please contact your child's teacher directly.

Some junior students in the school will be running the entire 3 km. If you are willing to run with that group, please notify Mrs. Moreau (Daiana.Moreau@tdsb.on.ca).

If you are interested in staffing a post along the route during the walk, please email Ericka Goldstein (Ericka.Goldstein@tdsb.on.ca).

All helpers need to be available between 8:30 and 10:30 a.m.

Please ask students to wear their Owen t-shirts or Terry Fox t-shirts on the 28th.
Thank you again for your continued support and generosity!

Terry Fox Committee
