Owen Family Update - Week of February 27, 2023

Dear Parents/Guardians,

We are coming to the end of another month and only two weeks away from our March Break.  We continue to work on community building, healthy relationships, conflict resolution and  establishing boundaries with our students through work with our Peace by Peace, our Social Worker, and Child Youth Worker. We are fortunate to have all this support to help create a safe space for everyone.  We also look forward to seeing the assembly being put on by our junior classes coming soon!

On Friday, we had 3 Owen students represent us at the Speech Art Public Speaking contest held at Denlow Public School.  These are the students who proudly represented Owen.  Listen to their amazing speeches.  We're so proud!

French – Gr 5 William Couper – “Nous pouvers changer le monde»

English - Gr 4 Natalie Michnea “Girls All Around the World Should Be Able to Go to School

Gr 5 Sophie Moukhina “Video Games Can Be Good for You!

Congratulations to Natalie for her 1st place award for the English speech!  Go Owen Go!

Thank you Denlow for hosting such an amazing event!

March is Greek Heritage Month.  If your family would like to share some of your favourite family cultural items or if you are interested in creating our cultural front display, please let us know!  We would love to learn more about your family traditions.

Front Loop Traffic - Thank you!

We are happy to report that safety has improved at the front and back of the school over the course of this week. Toronto Police Service Parking Enforcement have come by to to help us and have said that they will continue to check in regularly.  Going forward we plan to continue to have a single lane open in the front loop from 8:45-9:15 am.

We would like to thank everyone who has been remembering:
  • to respect the staff who are on duty directing traffic and ensuring student safety
  • to drive slowly and with great care
  • to park only in areas where it is legal to do so as per posted signs
  • to avoid stopping / parking in the fire access route at the front of the building
  • to refrain from double parking, passing other vehicles or backing up in the loop
  • having children exit on the curb side of the car
  •  driving around the block  instead of making three point turns in front of the school
  • parking well away from the crosswalk to ensure visibility
  • parking well away the bus loop so it is easy for buses to enter and exit
Thank you to those who have already emailed with safety concerns and sent us photographs so we can follow up with individual families if necessary, please continue to email hella.richter-glinos@tdsb.on.ca should you notice any problems.

At North York Central Library, they are running an After School Club on Thursdays from 4-5pm, from February 2 to March 9, for kids aged 6-12. Last Thursday Feb 9, they were learning about coding and robotics, using Dash robots. In the following weeks, kids will learn about how to create short movies using stop-motion animation, and snap circuits. Because space is limited, we invite folks to give them a call at 416-395-5630 to register.

Days of Significance

February is: African Heritage (Black History) Month

"During the month of February, the TDSB proudly recognizes African Heritage (Black History) Month. It is an occasion to celebrate the many achievements and contributions of peoples of African descent to Canada and the world. The chosen theme for 2022-2023 is Black Joy.

The theme of Black Joy was selected this year by the African Heritage Month Volunteer Planning Committee. This academic school year, "Joy" is one of TDSB's two overarching priorities. The first priority being the importance of joy, engagement and belonging in our schools as a foundation for academic achievement and student success; and the second priority being the elimination of disproportionate outcomes for students. Black Joy emulates how Black People have been able to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally as a People and as a Community, despite the systemic barriers and oppression faced."

February is also: Chinese Heritage Month

The TDSB honours the stories and identities of our students each and every day. In February, we recognize Chinese Heritage Month.

As mentioned above...

"We are always looking for families to create displays in our front foyer to share their special cultural holidays.  If you would like to share your special holiday, please contact the office and we'll arrange a time for you and some students to help with the display.

Some Days of Significance in the coming week are:

If you have a particular day that you would like to bring our attention to, please contact hella.richter-glinos@tdsb.on.ca
