Owen Family Update- Week of November 27

Dear Owen Families,

It was lovely visiting with so many of you at the Fall Affair Mixer. Thanks to the hard work of our many volunteers. We are grateful  to our wonderful sponsors! There were delicious  appetizers, mocktails, coffee, tea and desserts. There was a Created-at-Owen Art Auction, and a Silent Auction, all proceeds of which will support enhancements to the Math, Art, Music and Physical Education Programs at Owen. Then the  DJ got the dancing going.   A good time was had by all.

This week is shaping up to be a busy one:
  • Wednesday November 29th will be our First Caring and Safe Schools Committee Meeting.
  • This Friday December 1st, is the deadline to apply for Early French Immersion.
  • Friday is also the day of the grade 4 and 5 trip to Scotiabank Arena to attend the Raptors 905 game.  If you haven't already done so, please make sure you have used Permission Click to give your child permission to attend.  We know that this is a popular trip but we don't have more that one or two parent volunteer spots available per class.  All volunteers need to have a clear police check.
  • On Tuesday December 5th at 6:30  we are looking forward to celebrating the Winter Fun Concert.
You will find more details about these items and more below.

That evening we will have baskets where we will be collecting non-perishable food items for the Daily Bread Food Bank. "With 2.53 million food bank visits between April 1, 2022, and March 31, 2023. That is a 51% increase year-over-year, and the highest annual increase ever."

Caring and Safe Schools 2023 2024

Students, parents, educators, caretaking and administrators all work together as a team at Owen to address issues related to school safety.

The Caring and Safe Schools Committee survey indicated that Wednesday is the most convenient day for committee members and Tuesday is the second most popular day. So, our first meeting will be on  Wednesday November 29th from 11:55 AM -12:25 PM. The next will be on a Tuesday and the third on a Wednesday again. If you would like for us to send you the zoom link and agenda, please sign up here:  https://forms.gle/5jRWNWspDyszD6qd6

Even if you can’t make it to a meeting it would help a lot if if parents/guardians would please support us with the following:
1) Please reinforce what we are teaching the children about avoiding any and all rough / fighting / hitting / wrestling games.
2) Please discuss with your children that the only places for running are the gym or school yard and to please watch where they are going when they are running.
3) Please do not bring PokĂ©mon or other valuables to school since they are often at the center of disputes between children.
4) Let the office know if you become aware of an issue rather than intervening directly.

A gentle reminder:

Especially at school but also outside of school, it is incredibly supportive of our efforts to establish a respectful school climate here at Owen, when adults model positive interactions in front of our students.

They are asked to select the “sibling option” within the online application. Interested families can apply via the đź”—Application Link.
