As the world watches the search and rescue from the devastation in Turkey and Syria and the loss of over 33000 people, our thoughts are with our families who are awaiting news of loved ones back home.
The TDSB’s Professional Support Services Department has created a number of important resources that may be helpful for you and your children who may be experiencing a range of emotions right now and in the days and weeks ahead.
The TDSB has launched a board-wide campaign to raise funds for earthquake relief. Thanks to the Government of Canada, all donations to the Canadian Red Cross will be matched until February 22, 2023. To learn more and/or to donate, please visit the Canadian Red Cross website.
Some of our Owen families are also collecting items to support families in Turkey. Some of the items include the following:
New or gently used:
- Arctic tents - sleeping bags - blankets
If you can help, bring these to school directly to the office and our parent Guler will collect them next Monday February 20th. If you have any questions regarding this collection, please contact Guler at guler@yorku.ca .
Just a reminder that this is a short week. We have our Winter Activity Day for Grades 1-5 and report cards go home on Monday. If you would like an interview with your teacher, please contact your child's teacher via email to arrange a meeting.
As we celebrate Valentine's Day, we talk about friendship. Talk to your kids about what this means and what it means to be a good friend.

At North York Central Library, they are running an After School Club on Thursdays from 4-5pm, from February 2 to March 9, for kids aged 6-12. Days of Significance
February is: African Heritage (Black History) Month
"During the month of February, the TDSB proudly recognizes African Heritage (Black History) Month. It is an occasion to celebrate the many achievements and contributions of peoples of African descent to Canada and the world. The chosen theme for 2022-2023 is Black Joy.
The theme of Black Joy was selected this year by the African Heritage Month Volunteer Planning Committee. This academic school year, "Joy" is one of TDSB's two overarching priorities. The first priority being the importance of joy, engagement and belonging in our schools as a foundation for academic achievement and student success; and the second priority being the elimination of disproportionate outcomes for students. Black Joy emulates how Black People have been able to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally as a People and as a Community, despite the systemic barriers and oppression faced."
"We are always looking for families to create displays in our front foyer to share their special cultural holidays. If you would like to share your special holiday, please contact the office and we'll arrange a time for you and some students to help with the display.
The list of Days of Significance that the TDSB recognizes can be found by clicking the link.
