Owen Family Update - Week of February 6 2023

Dear Parents/Guardians,

It's so exciting to see students involved in so many different events at school post covid.  Our students have already been involved in basketball and volleyball tournaments.  Our ECO club is starting back up and students are ready to help to the environment!  Our Spirit Committee also has some fun activities so look out for those Spirit Days!

We would like your support to help improve two areas that have been a safety risk to our students and disruptive to our students' learning.

1) Traffic in the Front Loop - We are very aware of the time constraints parents are in prior to starting work.  However, safety of our students, staff and community are a priority.  Our staff supervisors are outside in the front and have structured the flow of traffic to avoid any possible accidents that may happen to our students.  Staff have been yelled at and disrepected for trying to keep kids save.  Please respect the procedures if you intend to use the front loop.  There is lots of street parking if you find the front loop takes too long.  You are welcome to park and walk with your child to their classroom door.

We will be seeing how the traffic flow is between now and Family Day.  If there is no improvement w e will have private conversations with these parents and then we will need to close the front loop to everyone between 8:45 am and 9:30 am (including for daycare parents) until we see an improvement in the area.  Please talk to other parents and help send the message that safety comes first!

2)  Disruptions to Last Period - Period 6 is as important as any other period in the day, maybe even more important as it's a time to consolidate learning and prepare students with their agendas and answer questions from the day. When students are called to leave, it is a disruption to the learning for all students in that class.

Please make appointments/lessons/activities after our school day.  A reminder that the bells rings at 3:40 pm. Please pick up students before 3:00 pm.  Students who need to leave for an appointment/lesson will come to the office after recess and wait for parents to pick them up so it is not a disruption to the class. Students will be marked absent for that period.  It will also help the office as everytime we need to call a student, an office staff is required to walk to the class to get them as our PA system is not working and in the works of being replaced.

If your child is leaving regularly during the week, please send a note to the office and the teacher for us to document their absence during last period.  If you have any questions, feel free to talk to Ms Glinos or Ms Rosenbloom.

Thank you for respecting our students' learning time and safety during morning drop off.  We appreciate your support with these matters.

~ Your Friendly Admin Team

We Have Plenty of Snacks and Cutlery - Thank you!

We have plenty of snacks and cutlery now due to the amazing donations from families.  Our snacks should last until the March Break.  At that time we will do another call to replenish our snacks.

We would like to thank the following families for their generosity.  If your name was missed, please let the Ms Rosenbloom know.

- Ander Mejia Ryazanova (Ms McRae) - snacks
- Rustin Bayat (Ms Hood) - snacks & cutlery
- Hana Pajang (Mr Rebick) - cutlery
- Avery & Ashley Szeto (M Price) - snacks
- Mana Yamamoto (M Price) - cutlery
- Gabriel (Mme Lee) and Micah (Mme Balaban) Spencer - snacks
- Ariko (Mme Hammond) and Anesu (Mme Lee) Chitapi - snacks

Snacks are important and sometimes we have those who forget or didn't pack enough for the day. Students can come to the office to ask for a snack but to note these are not for students to come daily. Thank you to these families for proving these great healthy snacks!

Parent Network Resources

At our Parent Network event we discussed helping children manage transitions at home with the kinds of visual schedules we use at school.  The symbols used for these schedules are available to all TDSB students through the Picture Dictionary in the Read and Write for Chrome extension. Here is information about accessing Read and Write for Chrome in general including a video specifically about the Picture Dictionary :

This is what the Surrey Place website says about visual schedules:

"WHY ARE VISUAL SCHEDULES IMPORTANT?
Visual schedules allow your child to see what is coming up next and understand the sequence of activities. By using a visual schedule, your child’s routine will become more predictable and expectations will be made clear. There are many benefits to using visual schedules, including:

    • Teaching new skills such as brushing teeth or doing laundry
    • Increasing your child’s independence in daily routines
    • Increasing behaviours you want to see by providing clear rules, expectations or steps for  completion
    • Providing structure to your child’s day and decreasing downtime
    • Reducing anxiety, uncertainty and repetitive question asking
    • Promoting flexibility and understanding of changes in daily routines
    • Promoting time management"

Days of Significance

February is: African Heritage (Black History) Month

"During the month of February, the TDSB proudly recognizes African Heritage (Black History) Month. It is an occasion to celebrate the many achievements and contributions of peoples of African descent to Canada and the world. The chosen theme for 2022-2023 is Black Joy.

The theme of Black Joy was selected this year by the African Heritage Month Volunteer Planning Committee. This academic school year, "Joy" is one of TDSB's two overarching priorities. The first priority being the importance of joy, engagement and belonging in our schools as a foundation for academic achievement and student success; and the second priority being the elimination of disproportionate outcomes for students. Black Joy emulates how Black People have been able to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally as a People and as a Community, despite the systemic barriers and oppression faced."

February is also: Chinese Heritage Month

The TDSB honours the stories and identities of our students each and every day. In February, we recognize Chinese Heritage Month.

As mentioned above...

"We are always looking for families to create displays in our front foyer to share their special cultural holidays.  If you would like to share your special holiday, please contact the office and we'll arrange a time for you and some students to help with the display.

Some Days of Significance in the coming week are:
