Owen Online - Family Update -- Week of September 11 2023

Dear Parents/Guardians,

What a week!  Welcome students and welcome parents!  It was exciting to see students and hear their stories about summer break.  We can't wait to see the potential of each and every one of our students.  We hope students can be mentors and leaders and get very involved in the Owen Community.

We have lots of information to share in the first Owen Online Bulletin.  Please read through the items carefully.  Our Owen Online is a way to see what is happening at school, be informed of events, link to our Google Calendar, Twitter account and Trustee Update.  You may even see photos of what is happening in your child's classroom or in the playground.  We also highlight students' talents outside of school.  If you have an achievement by your child, please email a photo and a description to Ms Glinos.

Missed the email for our Owen Online?  Not to worry!  You can always find an issue of the Owen Online on the Owen PS website.

As we navigate through our days, we continually assess and adapt our processes and procedures to improve our environment and support best practices.  Thank you again for your questions, support and offers to help.  We are very excited to have our parent community involved again at school.

Please read the important start up information below to help you know more about our Owen routines and expectations.

Feel free to contact us if you have any questions throughout the year.

A Message from Parent Council

Dear Owen School Community,

On behalf of the Parent Council, we would like to welcome you to the new school year! We are looking forward to an exciting, inspiring and fulfilling year for everyone.

Who are we? We are a group of Owen parents/caregivers. We operate under the Rules of the Education Act and the policies and procedures set by the Toronto District School Board (School Council By-Laws link).  We work very closely with Owen’s administrators.

The Executive Team consists of a Chair (or 2 Co-Chairs), a Treasurer and a Secretary.  All members are elected within the first 30 days of the start of the school and nominations are open to anyone who wishes to take part and be involved.

What we do? We volunteer a few hours of our time every month to help with the school’s fundraising initiatives, after school programs, and various ways that would benefit our school’s learning environment and our community at large.  The Chair(s) run the Parent Council meetings (about 6-7 of them per year), the Secretary records the minutes and the Treasurer is responsible for the Parent Council funds.

Why we do it? Because like you, we want the best for our children and our community. We believe in diversity of ideas, commitment to excellence and strong work ethic to help achieve our goals and help our children and community be the best they can be!

If, like us, you are looking to strengthen the learning environment at Owen, perhaps you are curious or want to learn more, we want to hear from you! We look forward to seeing you at our first Parent Council meeting.

Terry Fox Walk - Friday, September 22, 2023 @9:30 am

Every year, schools across Canada hold a Terry Fox event to raise money for cancer research. We are pleased to announce that Owen's Terry Fox Walk is here! Parents need to be sure to fill in the on-line Walking Excursion form in order for your child to participate on the neighbourhood walk.

We appreciate parents' generosity over the years and this year we will continue with past tradition in asking for parents and students to collect pledges from family and friends. You can donate directly through Owen's dedicated on-line donation page:  https://schools.terryfox.ca/OwenPSNorthYork

OUR GOAL IS TO REACH $5 000. To date, Owen has collected approximately $170 000 for the Terry Fox Foundation!

If you would like to volunteer on the walk with your child's class, please contact your child's teacher directly. If you would like to help out at a post along the route (9:00am-11:00) please email paula.kuzic@tdsb.on.ca directly, and she will provide you with more information.

Thank you again for your continued support and generosity!

Re: Toronto Public Health Back to School Information

Dear Parent or Guardian,

As you prepare your child to return to school in September, here is some important health information from Toronto Public Health (TPH) for the upcoming school year.

Reducing the Spread of Respiratory Viruses and Communicable Diseases
To help protect our school communities during respiratory illness season, staff, students, and visitors are being reminded to:

Dental Screening Program
TPH Dental & Oral Health Services staff will be conducting dental screening for all elementary school grades. For children with identified dental care needs, TPH will assist families in the process of finding a dental provider and will provide information about good oral health habits.

School Health Services
TPH’s team of health professionals work to service school communities using the Healthy Schools approach, based on the Ontario Ministry of Education’s Foundations for a Healthy School. Our School Liaison Public Health Nurses provide consultation, resources, referrals, and other supports to Toronto schools.

                        Student Transportation News

Transportation for students is starting on Monday.  Please be at your stop at least 10 mins early.  Please be patient because many of the bus drivers are new and still adjusting to the new routes for our school. Some even have multiple routes in a day.

If there is no adult to meet their child at the bus stop in the afternoon (Gr 3 and below), students will be returned to the school and we will call parents to pick up their child at school.  School busses cannot wait for late parents and delay the route.

Thank you for your patience as we navigate our bus transportation routines.

For details on your bus schedule, times and route, please see the bus planner site here: https://www.torontoschoolbus.org/

Questions / Applying for bussing for the first time?
Please email all questions to the Vice Principal Hella.Richter-Glinos@tdsb.on.ca

Empty Seat Policy
Students living less than 1.6 km from school are expected to walk.  Given that there is a shortage of drivers, we do not know yet whether there will be any seats available under the TDSB’s Empty Seat Policy (PR504).

________________________________

Safe Drop off, Pick Up and Parking

The GORDON Road loop is for BUSES ONLY.  Please do not drop your child off in or near the bus loop.

The OWEN BLVD loop is the kiss and ride for students in grades 1-5.  Please respect staff directions.  There is no passing of other vehicles.

Kindergarten students must  walked to the kindergarten yard.  Please see the map below regarding where to park legally around our school.

Our parking lot has a limited number of spots and these are needed for staff, daycare staff and TDSB tradespeople. Parents are not allowed to park in the parking lot.

Unless you require wheelchair parking, please park on a neighbouring street and walk your child to school using the sidewalks and avoiding the driveways, front and back loops.

Breakfast, Lunch and Snacks

A good breakfast can determine how good of a day a child can have, particularly for students with ADHD.  Read Best Breakfast with Kids: The ADHD Benefits Are Real -- and Delicious!

Students are still adjusting to an eating routine from summer schedules.  Please pack lots of snacks for morning and afternoon recess and a water bottle.

As an ECO Platinum school, we do not provide plastic cutlery or cups for students.  Please ensure your child brings their own spoons or forks and water bottles from home.

Our lunch hour begins at 11:55 am and ends at 12:55 pm.

Please go to your child's exit door and wait to pick up your child when the bell rings.

Students who were absent in the morning and entering school at lunch can go directly to their exit door and afternoon attendance will be taken then.  Students do not need to sign in at the office unless it is after 12:55 pm.
