Owen Family Update - Week of April 11th, 2022

Dear Owen Parents/Guardians,

The Muslim holy month of Ramadan is here again. For the next 29 to 30 daysMuslims will refrain from eating and drinking (including water) during daylight hours in order to focus more on their faith and avoid being distracted by worldly activities.  The act of fasting is meant to remind Muslims of the less fortunate and to reinforce the need to be thankful.  If your child is fasting and prefers to be in a quiet room during the eating portion of lunch, please let their teacher know and we will have a space for them to use if they would like.

Happy fasting and Ramadan Mubarak to all our Muslim families.

Indoor Shoes and Outdoor Rain Gear

Our crazy weather has us having snow on some days and other days up to 16 degrees celsius.  This type of weather brings a lot of muddy days.  Mr Vernon and the rest of our caretaking staff work hard to keep our schools clean.  Students are asked to change to their indoor shoes after recess.

If your child forgot their shoes at home, please drop them off at the library and we will ensure your child receives them in their class.  Students may also call home to see if parents are available to drop off their shoes or extra clothes too.

But keep watching our flowers in our gardens grow as these are sure signs spring will stay soon!

Moving Out of Owen for September 2022?

As we are beginning the process for next year please let us know if your child will be moving to another school.  We want to make sure their Ontario Student Records or any other important information gets forwarded to their new school.  If students are moving out of the province, their Ontario Student Records stay at Owen and can be retrieved if they return to Ontario.

Grade 5 students graduating will also need to complete this form.

Want to Volunteer? Police Check Required

As we slowly transition to having visitors back at school we want to remind parents that a police check is required to volunteer at our school events, lunch programs or class trips. Police checks are mandated to ensure the safety of all students.

If you have already done a police check please see Ms Nahid in person in the office to do your annual declaration.

If you have not done one, please pick up a police check form from the office or download the police check form.  It requires an office staff to witness it.  Please bring this to the office ASAP if you would like to volunteer.  It does take several weeks so please start this process early so you won't be disappointed!

COVID-19 Resources

We are very excited to see how some of our activities are returning to normal.  We take great care in keeping everyone safe and healthy by practising our regular covid protocols.  Please continue to keep children who are sick at home to prevent illnesses from spreading at school.

Just a reminder that students, staff and volunteers must wear a mask if:

- a household member is positive at home

- students have been sick

- entered Canada from International travel.

Eco club

Our whole school will be participating in a community clean up day! On Thursday, April 14th, please send your child with a reusable pair of gloves- they can be gardening gloves, rubber gloves, stretch mittens…something that can be washed and used again. You may want to send in a resealable container for them to bring home the dirty gloves so they can be washed at home.

Our caretaking staff will supply each class with a recycling bag and a garbage bag.
We will work together to remove litter and debris from our Owen School Grounds and The Owen Park. We will go over safety rules of never touching anything sharp or dangerous before we go out.

Thank you so much!
