Owen Online Family Update - Week of November 6, 2023

 Dear Owen Families,

Welcome to a new week of learning at Owen Public School.

On Friday we will have our Remembrance Day Assembly.  We look forward to welcoming our special guest, S Lt. Christopher Bobotsis, a Naval Officer with HMCS YORK.

Progress reports are underway.  They will be sent the week of November 13th*.  Teachers will be contacting you to arrange parent/guardian - teacher conferences.

We would like to remind parents/guardians of a few things:

1) Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather.  We will not be letting students into the building before 9:04 AM.
2) If you are planning to pick your child up early, it must be before 3PM.  We are trying to ensure uninterrupted instructional time from 3-3:40 PM.
3) Follow safety rules and staff instructions when using the kiss and ride.  There is no passing, no driving through the parking lot and no drivers getting out of the vehicle allowed.

Energy Drinks and Sports Drinks

It has come to our attention that some students are having energy drinks at school.  These are not meant for children.  Did you know that one very popular Energy drink contains 200mg of caffeine, per 12 oz. can? An extra large mug of coffee that is the same size contains 136.1 mg of caffeine. Energy drinks have nearly double the caffeine of coffee! On the lables of many Energy Drinks it states that their product is not recommended for children under the age of 18.

Sports drinks are also not recommended for children as they are very high in sodium and sugar. Please do not send your child to school with energy drinks or sports drinks. The best drink is water.

Lost and Found Items

Thank you Olivia B for cleaning up the Lost and Found.  Parents/Guardians if you recognize anything, please ask your child to retrieve their items.

Early French Immersion (JK entry)

November 6th to December 1st, 2023 (4 weeks) – Central Application Process

For families interested in the Toronto District School Board's Early French Immersion Program, we offer an online process to apply. The entry point to Early French Immersion is Junior Kindergarten. An offer of placement in the program (not a specific school) is guaranteed to all eligible on-time applicants. While every effort is made to place students in the school identified as their area French Immersion school, this not always possible. Students may be redirected to another school with available program space.

Families with an older sibling currently in an Early French Immersion program and who will be in attendance next year are still required to complete an online application for the new student. They are asked to select the “sibling option” within the online application. Interested families can apply via the 🔗Application Link.

More information about the Early Immersion Program is available in 🔗22 languages, or families may join one of the 🔗Information Sessions via live zoom webinar for more information about the application process.

Please note:

The deadline to apply to the program is December 1, 2023.

If a parent/caregiver cannot access a computer, please make an appointment and we will be happy to accommodate you at a school computer.

This e process is NOT handled on a first-come, first served basis. All applications received by the deadline are managed with the same priority.

If parents/caregivers experience difficulties, they may email at: PARS_FSL_Admin@tdsb.on.ca

A parent/caregiver may still submit an application online after the deadline passes on December 1, 2023; the application will be marked as late, and the application will be on a waitlist subject to available space until the end of September of the entry year; there is NO guarantee of placement.

Placements in French Immersion are offered based on the current home address of record in PowerSchool, NOT on location or enrolment in child care.
