Owen Family Update- June 6th, 2022

 Dear Owen Parents/Guardians,

Summer draws closer!  There are only four more weeks left of school.  What a great job we have done as a community to get to this spot!

Our parent council meeting that was scheduled for Wednesday June 8th has been postponed until June 15th.  We will send out a reminder to all parents prior to this date.  Hopefully we can have many more parents and/or new parents come to the meeting and perhaps get involved moving forward.

Virtual Pride Assembly

There will be a school-wide virtual assembly to celebrate Pride Month on Wednesday, June 15. The Grade 2 French and English classes at Owen are responsible for preparing this assembly! We will be using the morning announcement zoom link for this presentation.

Also, there will be a ‘rainbow rockets’ sale on June 10th so please send  $1 if your child would like to purchase them.

Covid-19 Vaccines for Children Survey

The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) is aiming to explore parents’ thoughts about COVID-19 vaccines for their children. You are being asked to participate in this study through Toronto’s schools as a parent or caregiver of a child who is age-eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine. Since the COVID-19 vaccine is now available for children, our research team is trying to understand what caregivers want and need to know about it.

As a token of our appreciation, once you submit the survey, you will have the option to enter your name and email in our survey draw. We will be randomly selecting five participants to each win one gift card.

All survey data collected from caregivers will be used to produce different, targeted educational tools for caregivers and children to encourage COVID-19 vaccination in the 5 to 11 age group.

Here is the link to participate in this study by July 1st:

Italian Heritage Month at the TDSB – June 2022

Italian Heritage Month has been proudly recognized during the month of June at the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) since a motion was passed by the Board of Trustees on May 16, 2012.  The Province of Ontario also marks Italian Heritage Month as a result of Italian Heritage Month Act (link:  https://www.ontario.ca/laws/statute/10i17 being passed in 2010.

As stated in the Italian Heritage Act, 2010, "Ontario is home to more than 1,350,000 Italian Canadians. Since the 1880s, the Italian Canadian Community has made and continues to make significant contributions to the growth and prosperity of the Province of Ontario".

This year the selected theme for Italian Heritage Month is Buongiorno Italia!  Keeping with this lens, to mark Italian Heritage Month at the TDSB during the month of June, the Italian Heritage Month Volunteer Planning Committee members have put together various ways to for students, staff and the TDSB community to learn about the Italian heritage.  Please enjoy L’Alfabeto Italiano” e book:  https://read.bookcreator.com/r53z4OI6PyW8NoQ0YSxxD2enAY23/oMELIOvjQ_qr382vQ5EQlg

Portuguese-Speaking Heritage Month at the TDSB

Portuguese-Speaking Heritage Month is proudly recognized during the month of June at the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) since 2011. The Province of Ontario passed the Celebration of Portuguese Heritage Act in 2001 (Link: https://www.ontario.ca/laws/statute/01c22) This year our theme is Andorinha! Watch us Soar!

The contributions of the Portuguese-Speaking Heritage community to Canada are significant as they include the arts, sports, music, culinary arts, and many professional contributions to educational and medical service areas. Canadians, along with all TDSB students, staff, and its communities and beyond all enjoy the energetic and vibrant traditions that are shared through the customs of this heritage. Over 1,400 TDSB students speak Portuguese as their mother tongue or as a primary language. Internationally, there are 250 million Portuguese-speaking people worldwide, making it the fifth-most spoken language.

This year we are thrilled to share with you that the annual Portuguese Parade will once again take place!  Everyone is invited to celebrate on Saturday, June 11 starting at 11:00 am at Lansdowne & Crawford (Link:  http://acapo.ca/event/portugal-week-2022-parade ).

Around the World in 26 months – Bon Appetit

COVID travelled throughout the world. One Owen family decided to travel to the 7 continents and 195+ countries virtually for 26-months.

William, a grade 4 FI student in Madame Balaban’s class, and family, embarked on this journey. For added excitement and accountability, another family was invited to share the experience.

Each month a different collection of countries were researched, including their history, past empires, events, politics and culture. Each presentation was prepared and shared via Zoom.

The families alternated every month to prepare the meal of their designated country and drop it off at the other family’s home for a themed dinner party. The same night, the child in that family had to prepare and deliver a comprehensive presentation on that country. William researched each one.

The trip started with Iran and the Persian Empire, followed by India and the British Raj, and so on. The travel to the USA was an extensive 4-part visit and it recently reached Canada.

Going to France included having Beef Bourguignon, ratatouille, salad niçoise, baguette with cheese and profiteroles.

The hours spent researching, analyzing and discussing each project, were tremendous, the experience invaluable and the journey along friends, out of this world.

William recently presented Canada to his class. To accomplish this, he did his work in French; from reading relevant books and websites to contacting the Quebec government for information.  This was a highly memorable trip for William and he wanted to share it with his Owen family.

 Bon Voyage!

If you have photos, student work or family activities you would like to share on the Owen Online for next week, please email them to jamie.parkes@tdsb.on.ca.
