Owen Family Update - Week of February 22nd, 2022

Dear Owen Parents/Guardians,

We hope you are all enjoying the Family Day weekend.  This is a special time for families to reconnect, play games and just enjoying being together.

We would like to welcome back some of our Virtual Learning students.  We know it will be an adjustment for these students and we will do everything to help them be comfortable at school.  Talk to your child about how it would feel entering school part way through the year and come up with ways to help them adjust.

Students returning to in-person are to bring their tech devices to their teachers on Tuesday.  Devices are available for students to use in class.

Thank you Mr John!

Mr John Scalia, our Head Caretaker will be moving to another school closer to home.  We would like to thank John for his services at Owen and wish him all the best in his new school.

February 23rd is Pink Shirt Day

Pink Shirt Day is celebrated on the last Wednesday of February each year. People wear pink shirts to signify the stand against bullying. This day started in Canada and is now observed on various dates around the world. In 2012, the United Nations declared the official day to be May 4, but some countries prefer to celebrate it on February 28 or 29, and this date is accepted by many countries worldwide, countries like the United States, France, Australia, New Zealand, Lebanon, and the United Kingdom.

Students can wear a pink shirt or their Owen shirt on Wednesday to show their support!  Have conversations with your child this week about what Pink Shirt Day means to them and how they can make it better for someone else.

Forgotten Items

Just a reminder that we are an ECO Platinum school and we want to continue to strive to help our environment.  Please remember to pack your child's water bottles and cutlery for lunch.  We will be asking students to call home if these items are forgotten daily.  Please help us save waste by packing a litterless lunch and reusing items to avoid garbage.

Indoor shoes are also required.  Students cannot walk around the school in socks as it is very unsafe for them.  Students should leave a pair at school to avoid having students call home for parents to bring to the school.

Updated COVID Screeners

Toronto Public Health has updated their COVID-19 screening tool for children, students and adults for immediate use. Notably, this is now a single, universal screening tool for all ages – students and staff. There is also a significant change for people who have had a confirmed COVID-19 infection within the past 90 days and not needing to self-isolate if, for example, someone in the home has symptoms. And, the travel section refers directly to the federal travel pages as changes continue to be made. Translated versions are also available on the Toronto Public Health website.

Transportation

Would you like your child to ride the bus?

If so, click here and see if you are eligible.    If you are, send our vice-principal an email at jamie.parkes@tdsb.on.ca.   He will then provide you with the application forms.

What should I do if the bus is late?

If the bus is late arriving at its stop, you can sign up for gps updates straight to your phone, or find out using your computer.    Sign up here and register within the parent portal.     This will provide you with locations of the bus, delays, and when it might be arriving.

Due to many mitigating circumstances, the bus is sometimes late, and it is natural to become worried.  Put your mind at ease by signing up for these alerts.

*Current riders can still sign up for these alerts as well.
