Owen Family Update - Week of March 8, 2021

Hello Owen Families,

Just a reminder that the March Break has been moved to April 12 - 16 2021.  School will resume as usual next week/

We would like to remind families to follow Health & Safety protocols both at school and at home.  Students who exhibit at least one of the symptoms listed in the Student Decision Tool will be sitting in our Wellness room until parents/guardians are able to pick up their child.  The Return to School form is required to be submitted to the office before students can return to class.

Though we are fortunate to not have any cases at Owen, several of our Owen families and Owen staff have lost close family and friends to COVID as well as other illnesses and tragedies during this pandemic.  Our thoughts are with those who are struggling with their loss.

To show your support, please continue our health and safety practices even as the restrictions get lifted.  We hope as cases drop and vaccines are rolled out, our new normal will become more familiar and routine.

Celebrate International Women's Day - March 8th 2021

Lean In Canada Toronto: International Women’s Day - Put Your Hand Up High and #ChooseToChallenge

About this Event

Lean in Toronto invites you to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) 2021 with us. This year the focus is on choosing to challenge by calling out gender bias and inequality. Around the world, women and men will be showing their support of this theme by putting their hand up and attending events to listen to stories and increase their knowledge to better support equality.

We plan to capture your attention with speakers who have demonstrated the power of challenging biases and living their chosen ambitions. The event will kick-off with 2 keynote speakers who are sure to impress and inspire you. Samra Zafar is an award-winning internationally renowned speaker, bestselling author, and educator for equity, mental health, and human rights and Nkechi Nwafor-Robinson is an experienced Information Technology professional with more than 20 years of experience in the financial services space, an entrepreneur, author, professional bodybuilder and inspirational speaker.

This IWD 2021 event will also feature a fireside chat with Rupinder Dhillon who has worked in the data field for two decades in data management, business intelligence, advanced analytics and, most recently, AI and machine learning and Torey Konecsni who is an experienced people leader across the management consulting, retail and telecommunications industries.

Together, we will engage with these trail blazers as we learn about how they have overcome perceived limitations to achieve great success in under-represented industries. Key themes to be discussed surround: navigating our careers, challenging the status quo, throwing our hands up high for equality and breaking boundaries to help pave the way for other women to succeed.

Heraclitus once said, “The only thing that is constant is change.”

Change won’t happen without choosing to challenge it.

Let's Choose to Challenge together!

Water Bottles

Lately we have  had many students coming to the office asking for cups.  We have limited cups in the office for water.  Please make sure that water bottles are packed with students' lunches.  The water fountains are closed but the refill station is open.  It's important to stay hydrated with the wearing of masks all day, daily activities during physical education, recess and the warm weather fast approaching.

We do have several water bottles available for sale.  Please look for the email this week if you would like to purchase one through cash online.

Dress for Weather

Our Toronto weather has changed from icy fields to muddy fields all within a week.  Please watch the weather with your child to determine what type of clothing they will need.

Most physical education classes as well as science walks, recess and any other outdoor education will continue with light rain.  Please ensure students have the following:
  • waterproof boots
  • water resistant coat or jacket
  • gloves and hat for the cold days
  • umbrella if they wish to bring one.
Extra socks, pants and underwear kept at school will help prevent a parent trip to school or having your child sit in wet clothes for the rest of the day.

Developing Your Child's Growth Mindset

Tired of asking, "What did you do at school today?" and getting a reply like, "Nothing.", or "How was your day today?" and your child responding, "Fine".

You can download the Good Night Glowing Cube printable. Follow the instructions to make a cube.  Every night before saying "good night", toss the cube to ask each other a question.  Add a LED light, finger light or glow stick (do NOT use a candle)to have a glowing effect! Poke some small pin sized holes or "stars" for extra fun.

Here are other conversation starters to help you know more about what your child is thinking and to build their growth mindset.
