Dear Owen Parents/Guardians,
- Sima and Jamie
Signing Students Out
This is just a reminder that you need to notify your child's teacher PRIOR to the school day that they will be leaving early for an appointment. Teachers are busy during the work day, and may not have time to read any last minute emails. Our office staff is also similarly engaged at different parts of the day, and cannot be interrupting learning by calling for students on the classroom phones.
It is Owen's policy that students should not be signing out of class after 3:15 pm, as the last period is already interrupted by students getting ready for the bus, or getting ready to go home.
Please try to book appointments in advance and outside of learning times.
Parking Enforcement and Student/Staff Safety
As the weather gets warmer, we encourage Owen Families to consider eco-friendly ways to get to school, such as biking, walking, or riding a scooter. If you must drive, it is important to keep all students and staff safe. Rules and guidelines are put in place to keep vehicles moving and to ensure the safe exit of students from vehicles. Some of these rules include:
- Drivers not passing in the Kiss and Ride lane (students crossing between vehicles could be injured by other vehicles)
- Drivers not parking and waiting in the Kiss and Ride lane; it is a Fire Route
- Drivers remaining in the vehicle while in the Kiss and Ride lane so as to not block the flow of traffic
- Drivers adhering to limiting speeds in the drop-off zone
- Drivers, parents and students following school staffs’ instructions
- Drivers treating staff, students, volunteers, passengers, and other drivers with respect
- Adults making sure students fully exit the vehicle before driving away from the Kiss and Ride lane
- Ensuring all passengers, especially students, have seat belts on at all times while in the vehicle
- Drivers not idling vehicles in the Kiss and Ride lane
- Not blocking our bus loops so our busses can stay on track to pick up kids at other schools.

May is Speech, Language and Hearing Awareness Month
May is a month to acknowledge and promote the work and support provided by Speech-Language Pathologist and Audiologists. The TDSB employs Speech-Language Pathologists and an Audiologist who work with students with a variety of communication (articulation, language, literacy, social and emotional communication, and fluency) and hearing strengths and needs. Through culturally responsive practices, we provide a wide range of services to support educators, families, and students. This May month, we would like share "Building Communication Through Play" (see attached), which highlights strategies to support students’ interactions during play and improve oral language development by engaging children naturally through activities of interest.
Pride Video Launch " Happy Pride"
The TDSB GSA network is pleased to announce we will be hosting a week of Pride activities from Monday May 30th - Friday June 3rd. Events will be held during lunch and afterschool and are open to students, staff, and families. A full schedule of events will be released in the coming weeks.
To kick-off the week, we are putting together a Pride Launch video with contributions from our virtual GSA, as well as GSAs from schools across the TDSB, and senior leadership. The video will be celebratory and educational, seeking to bring together 2SLGBTQIA+ communities within the TDSB.

Asian Heritage Month at the TDSB - May 2022
We are proud to celebrate the numerous achievements of Asian-Canadians and their significant role on the global stage. This year our theme at the TDSB is Many Voices United as One
The TDSB is the largest and one of the most diverse school boards in Canada. Nearly one-quarter of our students were born outside of Canada and collectively we speak more than 120 languages. According to the 2017 TDSB Student & Parent Census 40% of TDSB students self-identified as Asian.
During the month of May we are honoured to share with you several opportunities and resources to learn about the traditions, customs, and significant individuals that the Asian heritage brings:
1. A PowerPoint presentation on Asian Heritage Month reflecting our theme, Many Voices United as One, was created and will be posted to the TDSB public website www.tdsb.on.ca and internal website Heritage/History Month website under the Asian “tab” (Link: http://tdsbweb.tdsb.on.ca/equity/Heritage-History-Months/2021-2022

If you have already done a police check please see Ms Nahid in person in the office to do your annual declaration.
If you have not done one, please pick up a police check form from the office or download the police check form. It requires an office staff to witness it. Please bring this to the office ASAP if you would like to volunteer. It does take several weeks so please start this process early so you won't be disappointed!
